As part of the mania that is CHOGM, the Western Australian Museum is hosting an exhibition of objects from the British Museum representing many of the 54 Commonwealth nations. While the exhibition is not large, the pieces have been carefully chosen and present an interesting representation of human developmental and societal change. Luck would have it that when i went to see this exhibition, the head curator from the BM was giving a guided tour! I had also had the opportunity the night before to see Neil MacGregor, Director of the BM, give a lecture entitled “Museums in the Global World”. I think i had museum overload, as after nearly 2 hours of the tour my brain started to switch off. This of course only means that I will need to go back again, and as the exhibition is free, well I could go every week if I so felt like it!

The WA museum sits within the “Perth Cultural Precinct”, a phrase which is consider by some to be a bit of a joke, as the perth cultural scene has been very limited in the past (thankfully now changing). The Precinct houses the Museum, State Library, Art Gallery, Urban Orchard and 2 coffee joints.

Christmas craftiness

This year I am getting ahead on the christmas craftiness. The piles of coordinated fabric have started to turn into useable items! These are the Origami bags from Amy Butler’s Style Stitches: 12 easy ways to 26 Wonderful bags – I have made sizes, x-small, small and medium. While there are probably numerous free tutorials on the interwebs to make these bags, I bought the book more for the other larger bag patterns as I love to make bags, but rarely do they turn out as I want. Further I don’t really have the time to draft up patterns, so for $35 this book is a good investment for me.

The new problem however is deciding on who to give these to, as while I really like the fabric combos I’m not sure that everyone else will. Thankfully i still have 2 months to decide!

A brief summary (yet again) of what I wore for week 4 of SSS’11. I must admit as I don’t have as many wintry me-made garments, I was getting a bit bored with the clothing options come week 4 and a little less enthused overall.

I found myself in a melancholy mood on Sunday afternoon/evening. As the books i had beside my bed were quite heavy (a patrick white and herodotus), i turned to the bookshelf and picked up ‘The Time Traveller’s Wife’ again. I find (as I am sure most readers do) that books and moods must be matched for their to be literary enjoyment. Picking up TTTW for some reason has also led me tonight to ponder my style; and while I would like to ponder my on-going musing on my style, the amazing post that i wrote in my mind as i walked to coles for dinner (corn chowder) remains now elusive.

instead, i thought i might share my melancholy book and movie/tv show choices:

The Time Travellers Wife – i seem to always forget how much i enjoy the way this is written. the disjointed narrative (which in its own way is sequential) and the prose itself. I also love Claire and Henry. I am not at all like Claire, but when i read this book I strongly desire my own studio and the talent to create with paper.

The English Patient (book and movie) – this movie saved my bacon on my recent flight from Sydney to LA (I get rather panicky on planes). I love the passion, intensity and restraint in this film. Somehow it makes the sweltering heat look sexy (which I can assure you it isn’t, its just bloody hot). I really like Kristin Scott-Thomas, and watching this film always fosters my desire for high-waist wide -leg cuffed pants.

Frenchman’s Creek (Daphne du Maurier), book – I first read this when I was about 16; its light, fun, playful and easy to absorb.

Lost in Austen (4 part TV series) – i got on to this by chance earlier this year through ABC i-view and fell in love. I do love pride and prejudice (both the book and the mid-90s production), and this is such a playful spin on the novel. Sadly, I may have watched this enough times that i can quote lines.

Pondering these favourites of mine, has got me thinking again of things i would like to see in my wardrobe for summer. namely semi-fitted cotton tops and flared/gored, pleated or gathered cotton skirts.

Self-stitched September Week 2

For various reasons I couldn’t be bothered to pose for outfits (weather, laziness etc), so you will need to use your imagination for this weeks update (though you can refer to last week as there is some double ups). As a fair number of self-stitched garments are spring/summer orientated there will be a fair number of repeats until the weather picks up.

Day 1: me-made navy/white stripe jersey top, black pencil skirt, chunky pearl necklace

Day 2: me-made garter yoke cardi, wide black leather belt, Saba pencil skirt

Day 3: me-made denim skirt, black shirt, jumper unknown (memory fails)

Day 4: jersey reversible (black/grey) vest with blue ribbing at the armholes (pattern from Cut magazine Oct or Nov 2009 (german)), jeans, black cotton shirt
Days 5 & 6: site clothing (hi-vis) – as I was wandering the middle-of-nowhere-WA you will have to pardon the lack of SS garments as I will not waste my time and skills making anything fluorescent orange.

Day 7: me-made pencil skirt from burda style jan 2011, top unknown (i need to keep better records), wide black Cue belt
